It's Official I'm now inducted into the Carrington Fellowship Network - Oladapo Omitogun.

On the 16th of August, 2022, It was official, as I was inducted into Carrington Fellowship .

Carrington Fellowship (CYFI) is a dynamic youth-based initiative launched in 2011 by the U.S Consulate Lagos and named after former Ambassador to Nigeria, Walter Carrington. CYFI brings together Nigerian youth of exceptional vision and experience to design and implement projects that will have a positive impact in Nigeria.

I first got to know about CYFI during the year 2019. Made some research about it and I discovered the incredible programs and opportunities the fellowship provides with stories from amazing past fellows like Hammed Kayode Alabi, Oluwatosin Taiwo, Obasanjo Fajemirokun and I got to learn the story of Project Enable Africa a CYFI incubated idea that's is doing very well, a project that's initiated by the team fellows of Olusola Owonikoko who is now the president of the Carrington Fellowship Alumni Network.

I applied for the Carrington Lagos Fellowship 2019, 2021 and got rejected.

When the application for the 2022 Carrington Fellowship Lagos came out I didn't apply because I'm not sure of my commitment to the fellowship due to where I reside (Ogun State). Then just a month after the Carrington Lagos Fellowship Application was closed.

There was a chance for me to apply with great news of its introduction to Ogun State with the support of The Kensington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation (KAAF).

I took my time to learn from the different CYFI Application Sessions I could get and answered all application questions thoroughly and submitted them on the last day of the CYFI Ogun Application closing.

I had that conviction that I will be shortlisted because I put in the work and hurray yes I was shortlisted in over 1,000 applications, taking down to 40 applicants to be interviewed in Ogun State. The interview happened on my birthday (August 10) and I was very happy I was able to sell myself very well and show my interest in why I would like to be part of the fellowship.

Two days after I received the congratulatory mail to be part of the Carrington Fellowship and I must say I'm glad to be one of the 10 CYFI pioneering applicants selected in Ogun State after a rigorous check of application and interview. I would be learning and working alongside other remarkable fellows like Adetola Oremosu, Grace Anuforo, Okolo Ikechukwu Innocent, Taiwo Adenuga, Titi Taiwo, Paul Bennett, Amarachi Ugochuku, Odunayo Ayoola, and Titilayo Akinlose in Ogun State.

I'm placed in the economic empowerment team to work with two other fellows...

I appreciate my interviewers Owonikoko Olusola Samuel and Timi Onafeso for seeing me worthy of being part of the Carrington Fellowship and to the CYFI Network Board and US Consulate General Lagos for providing this platform for young change-makers like me to grow and bring positive change in underserved communities.

Oh yes, the journey has just begun...

Please follow me and the Carrington Fellowship of the United States Consulate, Lagos, Nigeria and watch out for my space for a year-long remarkable telling of stories of me touching lives positively.

Now an Alumnus of the Carrington Youth Network (CYN)

Thankfully I have completed my one year fellowship of the Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative program. I'm now officially inducted into the Carrington Fellowship Network as an Alumnus. I'm grateful for the journey so far and the great people I have met in the program. Looking forward having a continuous reflection and building long lasting partnerships and opportunities to scale my impact.

Love Yourself, Even Alone.

One aspect of life that I never get tired of preaching about is the concept of self-love . Self-love is an essential component of a fulfilling life, and it's crucial to learn to love yourself even when others may not. When you love yourself, you're more likely to have positive relationships, make better decisions, and enjoy a sense of inner peace and contentment. It's important to remember that not everyone will appreciate or accept you for whom you are, and that's okay. People have their own beliefs, preferences, and biases that can influence how they view others. However, it's essential to focus on your own self-worth and not let the opinions of others define your sense of self. Learning to love yourself takes time and practice. It’s an everyday struggle that I myself have to deal with, especially at the start of my career and involvement with friends and strangers. It involves acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses, embracing your imperfections, and trea...

Teaching in an underserved school like mine has been a challenging and rewarding experience - 5 things I learned.

I teach in a low-income farming community called Joga Orile, a small village in the part of Yewa North Ogun state, Nigeria. When I got to this community, I realize that the community only has one public primary school among many private schools. But when checking the private schools here, the numbers of pupils are not many compare to my school but there is this challenge of limited resources to satisfy the large pool of pupils that most times can't afford to buy learning materials like notebooks, textbooks, rulers, etc. At some times in my fellowship here as a Teach For Nigeria fellow I am glad to have received support from friends and some civil society organizations to come to help curb this challenge. I know there is more work to be done and I will never stop until I drive for better innovation and policies to be designed and implemented to battle this problem. I'm almost getting to the end of my fellowship here in this community and I will like to share 5 things I lear...
